24/04/2023

Wine is a beverage that has been enjoyed by people around the world for centuries. When one looks back at its history, one will realize that wine packaging has undergone significant changes. From the ancient clay amphorae to modern cans, it has evolved to meet the needs of producers, consumers, and the environment.

Whether you're a wine connoisseur or simply someone who enjoys a good glass of vino, knowing about wine packaging will definitely enhance your appreciation for this beloved beverage!

The packaging has gone from using sturdy, airtight vessels called amphorae during ancient times, to glass bottles that eventually became the standard for wine packaging. The shape and size of bottles evolved over time, with different regions and varietals using distinct bottle shapes. Next in, were cock closures and screw caps that helped provide a consistent seal.

As brands and wine production developed, Bag In Box was introduced. BIB is practical to dispose of because it is made entirely from recyclable materials. Unlike the classic glass bottle, BIBs maintain the wine’s organoleptic properties right down to the very last drop.

Soon, Tetra Packs also started being used for packaging. It not only protects the quality of the wine but also the quality and environmental viability of the production chain. It is also eco-sustainable and recyclable. Some other wine packaging options to explore are canned wines, pouch bags, cask wines, and many more!

One of the wine brands, that have adopted various packaging methods to promote sustainability and recyclability is Cantine Settesoli, who is also one of our Exhibitors of IBWSS, 2023. As a cooperative with 2.000 members, they produce the vastest range of grapes in Sicily (Italy), growing  36 different cultivars over 6.000 hectares of vineyard and 1000 hectares of which are dedicated to certified organic cultivations.

“The ‘premium’ positioning of our wines, supported by the offer of a consistently high-quality product for the end consumer, is at the heart of our long-term strategy. A strategy that has been accomplished and strengthened through constant research, winegrower awareness campaigns, the defense of important issues, and improving organizational efficiency, which all contribute to the sustainability of the sector”, says Giuseppe Bursi, Chairman of Cantine Settesoli.
